The color of a diamond refers to the body color of a diamond. The color of a diamond can range from colorless to yellow. A more colorless diamond is rarer and more valuable because it appears brighter to the eye. The most respected system used today for evaluating diamond color was developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). The GIA diamond color grading system classifies diamond color within the following scale of letter grades:

D,E,F,G,H,I,J,K,L,M,N,O,P,Q,R,S,T,U,V,W,X,Y,Z. 

We recommend choosing a diamond that is between (D) colorless and (I) near colorless. Diamonds that have color grades below (I) exhibit noticeable traces of color to the eye.

Diamonds are assigned color grades by comparing them to diamonds with color grades which have been certified by GIA as master color guide diamonds. The color grade of a diamond is determined by placing the diamond face down on a white background and viewing it from the side next to a master color guide diamonds whose color value is certified. If the color tone matches between the two diamonds, the diamond is assigned the color grade of the comparison master diamond. Color grading diamond should be done using a white light source.
