Learn about Clarity
Clarity describes
the presence or absence of inclusions within the diamond and blemishes
on its surface. These slight "birthmarks of nature" makes every diamond
quite unique. However, they do effect the beauty and value of the diamond.
These natural birthmarks are often referred to as inclusions.
The fewer inclusions a diamond
has the more rare and valuable it is. Diamonds which contain numerous
inclusions are less brilliant because inclusions interfere with light
passing through the diamond.
Because just one clarity
grade greatly effects a diamonds value, it is wise to insist on a Certified
- Plus Diamond whose quality has been graded by an independent internationally
recognized gemological laboratory.
When selecting your diamond
choose a diamond that does not have inclusions that are visible to the
eye. GIA grades Flawless to VVS2 contain none or very very small inclusions
that are very difficult to find under 10 power magnification. These
diamonds usually command the highest prices in regards to clarity. GIA
grades VS1 to VS2 have very small difficult to see inclusions under
10 power magnification. GIA grades SI1 have inclusions that are slightly
more noticeable under 10 power magnification but unnoticeable to the
naked eye. GIA grade SI2 displays inclusions that are noticable under
10 power magnification. SI2 grade diamonds have inclusions that are
usually unseen to the naked eye when viewed from the top except in the
case of large diamonds over one carat in size.
If you are looking for quality
diamond at an affordable price stay between VS1 and SI1. Diamonds below
SI2 are generally not recommended because they contain inclusions that
are noticeable to the eye, although they can be purchased for substantially
less. The diagram shown provides a general understanding of diamond
clarity grades and how they are assigned.
